My Gift

Photobucket
La Paz, Mexico :: Summer 2009

I went to see The Horse Boy this weekend. And boy, the first 20 minutes hit home. Hard. Rewind 12 years. I was there. I had almost forgotten. I had almost forgotten because of who and where my son is now.

He went with me. At 17, he watched this film, as the Isaacson family gave us a painful look into the daily routine of their lives. He says he doesn't remember the challenging parts of his childhood. When my now 3 year old daughter, has her [normal developing] meltdowns, Domi more often than not, is horrified at her behavior, especially if its in public. I chuckle when I witness his response, and I gently remind him this is normal development for a 3 year old, and that he did it too. Tenfold.

And then he smiles. And he tries again with her.

The inconsolable tantrums have been replaced with sophisticated conversations.
The self-stimming hands have grown into refined hands that create beautiful art.
Hands that create music with his vintage Bach trumpet and baby grand piano.
The unsociable child is now a humanitarian, surrounded by a strong circle of friends whom he loves.

Time moves so quickly.

Years ago, going to the grocery store was a daunting task, and often ended in both of us crying. Now, I'm relishing what time we have left with him under our roof. I ask for his company when I go to the store. I look forward to, and cherish, our short morning commute, with a stop for a cafe au lait and a mocha while listening to NPR. It's a routine that I've grown to love because I'm enjoying the young man he has become, and at 17, that time left with him at home, is slipping away.

Like the Isaacson family I, too, have had my own little miracle, and seeing this film, helps me remember, that my amazing son, my son with Autism, is my gift.

His First Date

Not really sure if it can be called an official “date” if I drove them to his formal high school band banquet (since neither are driving yet), but I’d say it’s pretty close to being a first date.

After a quick introduction of parents, came the inevitable mamarazzi moment of photo-taking by both mothers. Immediately, the two teens stiffen up like soldiers about to go marching, but wearing forced smiles. My guy was exceptionally stiff. He almost looked like he was in pain. I think it may have been a form a torture for them. I’m sorry, but I HAD to help—just a bit. I let them know it was ok to get a little closer, and to relax. (I'm SURE that was NOT easy with their parents looming over them, cameras in hand). Here, Domi is reaching for her arm, and the stiffness went a way for a moment, so I quickly snapped the shutter.

Photobucket

I do have to say, I’m quite taken by Domi’s new friend. She’s charming, extremely well-mannered, and exceptionally bright—she’s a writer, a poet (I think her vocabulary may be larger than mine), and likes to sing. I enjoy listening to their deep conversations in the car whenever I give her a lift home from school.

But the most important part--she enjoys being around my son. Even if this simply blossoms into a beautiful friendship, a
ny girl who can see his inner beauty, is a keeper in my book.

Meet the Hutlock family. Any day now, they will welcome a bambina into their family. They're keeping her name top secret though, until she's born. Even Colton here, wouldn't spill the beans.

Andrea, I'm wishing you a smooth and beautiful labor, and am so incredibly happy for you and your family.

Much Love,

Blessingway | Alternative Baby Shower

You know you’re an Other Mother when you're at a get-together and snap photos like this.

Photobucket

Last night, several of us O’Mamas got together and we celebrated a Blessingway for the expecting mamas in our mother’s group. There are five babies due this spring! And 4 of the 5 expecting guests of honor are mamas of children I care for (or have cared for). I truly feel a strong connection with these women.

Unlike your typical baby shower, there is no commercial gift giving emphasis at a Blessingway. The guests are invited to spend time with the mother-to-be. It’s very mama centered and friends and family get together to give the expecting mama(s) support as she waits for her labor to begin.. We made a bracelet for each of the mamas to wear in labor to remind her of everyone thinking of her. The guests talked about why they chose the beads they did, what their beads symbolize and we sent a message to the mothers as we strung the beads.

The mamas also got some beautiful henna done on their tummies by the talented Nisha.

Domi-isms

So, last night I'm at an Evening of Indulgence at The Good Earth Day School, and I see an email come through my cell phone from my husband.

Growing Pains

Last night, we drove to my brother 's house for dinner, which is down by the lake. For those of you who live locally, we take Volente Rd (a windy road) to get there. Sophia even squeals, "Wheeee!!" as we drive down it. On many parts of this road, it feels secluded and even a bit like we're in the mountains surrounded by trees and darkness, and at times, like a rollercoaster, with its tight curves and hills.

As I put my brights on Domi says, "Oh, yeah, Donovan did that when we drove down this road last week". So, that reminds me, we haven't had a chance to really talk about what he did with his uncle while Mike and I went camping. (The HS made football playoffs, so the band had to go with them to Houston last weekend, so that's why Domi stayed behind under the supervision of my brother).

Me: "So what did you do with Donovan last weekend?"

Domi: "Oh, yeah Donovan taught me how to drive!"

Me: [a bit startled at first, then reminded myself that Mike has been working on teaching Domi to drive for a while in the empty church parking lot and down our neighborhood street. And Domi is after all, at that age].
"Ok, sounds good. Where did he teach you?"

Domi: "What do you mean?"

Me: "Did he teach you in the parking lot of the high school?"

Domi: [in the most casual voice] "No. Actually, I drove down THIS road after he picked me up from the high school Saturday night."

Me: [my head does a subtle jerk] "Uh, you drove down THIS road at NIGHT?!?"

Domi: "Yeah! I drove all the way to his house! And I didn't panic once!"

Me: [sigh]

--
*Note to Donovan: In a few years, Auntie Andrea is going to show your girls how to apply makeup, and how to walk in "Tacones" (heels) before you're ready. Orale?
Heck, I may even buy them some princess dress up heels for Christmas. I KNOW you'll LOVE that.
;)

--
I enjoy hanging out in Domi's room. I know, it sounds crazy. Most moms don't want to open their teenager's doors with a 10 ft. pole, for fear of what they might find. For me, I especially enjoy sitting in there and looking at what project/creation he's currently working on.

BSM ~ Newborn Beauty

Here is one of my favorite shots from the homebirth I photographed this week.
Amazing, that just a couple hours earlier, he was inside his mother.

The Beauty of a Homebirth

Earlier this week, I had the honor and privilege of photographing my good friend, Stephana's, homebirth. Even though I've given birth to all three of my children in a hospital setting, a homebirth was something that I wanted to experience because it represents something so huge and unknown to many women, including myself. Stephana's goals with documenting her homebirths are to work on enlightenment and education for the world to restore a woman's natural right to give birth as she chooses, and have an alternative concept other than fear and pain surrounding the whole pregnancy and birth. Well, she certainly did it. And she made it all look so easy.

She gave birth in record time. So fast in fact, that even though I arrived 55 minutes after I received the call that she was in labor, she had given birth about 10 minutes before I arrived. My dear friend,
Anjalika, a film maker, was also scheduled to be there for the homebirth because Stephana wanted documentation for the non-profit site she is preparing, and Anja arrived about 15 minutes after I did. The good news is that she was able to get some pre-delivery interviewing in the day before Stephana went into labor.

The experience of effectively being behind a dSLR camera is relatively new for me, and I wanted to make sure I stayed in the shadows during the post-birth procedures and also to give mother and baby that intimate time. It's one thing to stick a camera two feet from my toddler's or teens' faces, but this was different--very different, and I wanted to be a fly on the wall, yet capture the beauty I was seeing all around me. So there was that fine balance I had to keep.

This experience has impacted me in such a profound way. Even though I myself have given birth, it was so incredible to be on the other side, and see this amazing thing us women can do, and that is to give life. Thank you, Stephana and Kelly for allowing me not only in your home, but allowing me to be part of such an intimate and sacred event.

I am forever grateful.

Even though lighting was very dim (it was important to mother that there not be bright lights or flash when baby arrived), I was able to capture some beautiful images.

My Boys

No matter how tall they get, or how much facial hair they grow, these two guys will always be my boys, and I love that they still enjoy spending a Sunday morning with their momma. It was a day just for the three of us. It's ACL weekend here, so the streets were filled with peeps. We hit Congress avenue and enjoyed some of the venues it had to offer and soaked up some Jo's.

Photobucket

I love how this photo captures Jay's strength and masculinity, and Domi's contemplative and peaceful nature.
This shot remids me of "Today".

Photobucket

Even though the other two shots *speak* to me more, I choose this as my BSM, because it's fun.

Brecken

This post concludes my shots from my recent Seattle trip for my rendezvous with my childhood girlfriends. One of the most gratifying moments for me was seeing my dear friend Dawn, as Mom. You see, the rest of us had children very early (most of us have teenagers now), and she's the only one that waited. A long time. I'm going to tell a quick Dawn story even though this post is titled Brecken. You have to know a bit more about Dawn to see where I'm coming from on this post.

Dawn, Liza and I go WAY back. Back to elementary school. Like, back to big crayons. Dawn was what some teachers would have described as say ... um... ahem, a 'spirited child'. She was one of the brightest crayons in the box, but man, this girl was ALWAYS getting in trouble at school. She was a 'textbook' redhead (short tempered, fiery, fiesty) and let's just say, she spent a LOT of time at the principal's office, and I'll leave it at that. ;)

Dawn has been a teacher for over ten years and recently was promoted to be an assistant principal because she has an amazing way with students. But, when I saw her with her son, with so much patience and love, my heart melted, because I saw a love so pure, so true, and so unconditional.
Like I said earlier, I just loved seeing Dawn, as Mom.

This is her boy, Brecken and I was very pleased to finally be able to meet her little man.
